What shapes employee engagement in today’s organizations? How do leadership, cultural initiatives, and subtle forms of direction interact – and what effects do they really have?

Monika Müller, Senior lecturer and Associate professor in Organizational Studies at Lund University
This Hot Spot explores how different ways of steering, influencing, and shaping culture can become powerful tools — or unintended obstacles — in organizational life. Participants will gain insights into how culture and control interact and how these forces can align with both business goals and employee well-being.
Topics for exploration include:
- What are the positive, negative, and unintended effects of different forms of culture and ways of providing direction?
- How can management practices — such as culture management or concerted control — shape organizational behavior and employee engagement?
- How do informal influences and cultural initiatives interact with more formal steering practices, and what dynamics emerge from this interplay?
- How can culture and influence become assets for both employees and management?
Monika Müller, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in Organizational Studies at Lund University, leads the session. Drawing on current research and practical examples – including areas like internal branding, i.e., efforts to align employees with brand values and identity – this session will invite reflection and exchange on how culture, direction, and influence shape organisational dynamics and everyday work experiences.
